Erik ten Hag will bring his Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag to Manchester Unitedalmost nine years after the Dutchman suffered a heart attack on the sidelines.

In September 2013, Van der Gagg was in charge of Lisbon-based Belenenses when he fell ill during a game against former club Maritimo.

He was implanted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, the same technology that allowed Brentford’s Christian Eriksen to return to action after suffering cardiac arrest at the Euros.

Van der Gagg has regular medical checks and has become an influential sounding board for Ten Hag at Ajax over the past three years.

The 50-year-old will accompany Ten Hag to Manchester after the Dutchman informed United he preferred Van der Gagg over former Reds manager Steve McClaren as an assistant.

Ten Hag are also keen to add Robin van Persie to their backroom squad, as Mirror Sport reported earlier this month.

Van Persie, who is currently working at Feyenoord academy and studying for his coaching badges, is yet to make a decision on the offer.

Van Persie, who scored 58 goals in 105 games for United between 2012 and 2015, is keen to return to the Premier League, despite his family situation complicating matters.

Van Persie’s son Shaqueel Van Persie only recently signed his first contract with Feyenoord, and the bright kid – who joined Manchester City’s academy when his father was at United – is training alongside his father in the Dutch club’s junior system.

Dina Van Persie, Van Persie’s daughter, is also one of Holland’s top show jumping talents, which he will consider.

McLaren, who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant when United won the Champions League in 1999 and spent two spells in the Netherlands as manager of FC Twente when he led them to their first Eredivisie title , does not seem to return to Old Trafford.

During the 2018-19 season, McClaren was the manager of Queen’s Park Rangers. Despite this, he worked with Derby County, which is managed by former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

When Ten Hag takes over, United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick will become a consultant.

Ten Hag has previously said he is open to the possibility of Rangnick sitting across from him in the Old Trafford dugout. According to Ten Hag:

“My managerial education in top-flight football I had at Bayern Munich. There is hardly a better education for a coach or a manager.

“I love the German model. In Germany, it is common for sports directors to sit right next to you on the bench. If you have a good sporting director, you know they remove a lot of the noise around the manager – both internally and to the outside world.

“He will support you and also save you all the hassle with the football agents. This way I can fully concentrate on the team and the development of the players. I only see the advantages of a sporting director close to you on the bench. I want a sports director who can be honest and straight. If something is wrong, you know it quickly and it can be said to your face because you work with each other every day.
